RIO’s Big Three!

RIO  Spey lines for lighter rods!

I was testing three different spey lines extensively and have fished with them one and a half season.  Here is my opinion:

  1. RIO WindCutter Spey #4/5. General purpose spey line, for almost all situations. I like belly length of this line: not too long nor too short. For this lightline size, the belly is around 50 ft (15 meters) which I found that perfectly suites my casting abilities! It is very easy to control this line on the water! I also like a bright yellow color on it, with greenish loading section at the end of the belly. This helps me pick up the line easily.
  2. RIO Power Spey #5/6. Don’t play a game with this line if you’re not get used with longer bellied lines! But once you master all casting rules concerning these long belly lines, you will reach the next horizon – guaranteed! The line for distance spey, definitely, but  so smooth  at the same time. Belly profile of this line is tapered twice which makes Power Spey unique one! Even with light line  size #5/6, you can cast further like never before but still retain smoothness and finesse. Sounds perfect, isn’t it?
  3. RIO Skagit  300gr. The lightest Skagit line as far as I know. Well, this line casts like a bullet but need some practice with Skagit casting techniques Easy turn on long heavy weighted leaders, which brings this line on the top of the “down and deep” lightline spey situations. Thanks to specific thick Skagit line profile, even with lightest one I fished with small streamers and put them deep into the pools of Neretva River and got some nice browns!

The Scott S4

I was waiting for this rod since more than 20 years! The S4 is something really unique! After a whole two years of extensive field testing, I am free to say that Scott Pro Team made the rod unlike any other in Scott’s prolific history.

The Scott S4

The S4

My first contact with the S4 was at Denver Show, September 2007, where this rod was introduced. From the first casts with it, I knew that I hold a rod with hidden, mighty opportunities. Let’s see, what makes the S4 so special…

Scott Booth at Denver FFR S4 at Scott booth, Denver FFR show

It’s easy to say: this rod is fast! But that’s not enough to explain  its true nature. Yes, it is FAST rod. With very quick tip recovery rate. But amazingly, there is no unnecessary stiffness through the blank – something what I call MFM (“muscle fatigue maker”- found on many fast action rods nowadays). The rod feels very smooth and gentle during casting stroke; this enables me to adjust my grip and hold the rod easily, with loosy, one finger grip. This is very important to me, since I cast with elegant, Central European style. I don’t like to waste my energy while casting, and the S4 allows me exactly that!

Jelena with S4 at Dream Stream             Jelena at Dream Stream – S4 bends while playing something big!

The S4 is RESPONSIVE, much more responsive for all casting ranges than any other rod I had been casting in the last decade! There is something “hidden” in a middle part of its blank, which enables the rod to load at its maximum. Very important for extreme distances! But yet retaining smoothness, and I appreciate that very much, because I like to feel the line into the air. I like the rods with soul, and S4 has it definitely! The S4 is LIGHTEST in its class! Try one for yourself and you’ll feel the proof!  COSMETIC is so nice: deep glassy natural graphite color; silvery thin wraps; measuring markers for your trophy; alignment dots; new and improved reel seat with exotic wood spacer; and my favorite improvement upon previous  S3 rods: sleeve over ferules against “spigot”. Try and you will see the difference!

Scott Brown             Yellowstone River brown, 25incher, with S4 904/4

It is easy to conclude that the S4 is the ultimate fast action rod with huge capability for gentle up close and middle far presentations; the rod for delivering extreme distances with remarkable easy; the rod with whom you will enjoy fighting and lending your trophy; the rod so easy for casting you will actually feel the line only, not entire blank; the rod you will be proud of !

S4 and little brownie              Can’t wait the new S4 – for saltwaters!
